Tron (TRX) price history
The price of Tron (TRX) has historically fluctuated between $0.001091 (September 15, 2017) and $0.3004 (January 5, 2018). Tron’s price history starts from September 2017. This information is based on historical data from Coinmarketcap.
Tron entered the market in 2017 through an ICO. The ICO was held on the Binance exchange, so technically, it was an IEO (and one of the first IEOs on the market). Tron’s ICO price was just $0.002. This was also the price of the TRX token when Tron became freely tradable.
December 2017 saw a massive crypto-currency boom that continued into the first week of January 2018. Tron was one of the biggest beneficiaries of this boom. Investors got so excited about the TRX token that its price increased 150 times in just two months!
On January 5, 2018, the price of Tron rose to as high as $0.3. This is still Tron’s ATH price, i.e., the highest quote ever. The graphic below shows the historical development of the Tron price since 2017.

The bear market of 2018 was rough for Tron. At its worst, the price of the TRX token dropped to around $0.015, i.e., below the ICO price. This means Tron collapsed 95 percent from its price peak.
Tron’s price started to rise at the beginning of 2019. At the end of 2019, the trend turned negative again, and TRX made a new bottom quotation in the market collapse of March 2020. At that time, Tron’s price dropped below $0.01.
The spring of 2021 saw a new cryptocurrency bull market. Tron’s price rose along with other cryptos. The TRX token slightly more than quintupled its price, rising to $0.16 at the end of April. TRX did not rise higher than this in 2021, so the price fell short of the three-year-old ATH reading.
The TRX token was one of the most positive surprises of the 2022 bear market. The price of Tron fell significantly less than many other cryptocurrencies. The TRX token eventually fell around 75% from its 2021 peak, but many competing coins plunged 90-99% simultaneously.
In 2023, a new bull market took place in crypto. This disappointed Tron investors, as the price of Tron rose less than one hundred percent. This was a significantly smaller rise than what Bitcoin (and many other altcoins) did.
Where does Tron (TRX) get its value?
Tron’s native token, TRX, gains value through the success of the Tron ecosystem. The more applications are built into the Tron ecosystem, the more TRX tokens will be used. A similar mechanism also applies to other smart contract platform tokens.
Tron’s competitors are Ethereum, BNB Chain, Cardano, Avalanche, and Polygon. After Ethereum, Tron is the largest smart contract platform in terms of liquidity. It has been among the top three platforms (measured by TVL) since 2022.
See the current data below.
| Platform | Native token | TVL | Market share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | ETH | $64.9 billion | 54.0% |
| Solana | SOL | $9.5 billion | 7.8% |
| Bitcoin | BTC | $6.8 billion | 5.5% |
| Tron | TRX | $6.7 billion | 5.4% |
| BNB Chain | BNB | $6.5 billion | 5.3% |
| Base | - | $3.9 billion | 3.2% |
| Arbitrum | ARB | $2.7 billion | 2.2% |
| Sui | SUI | $2.2 billion | 1.8% |
No top-rated DeFi apps have emerged from the Tron platform, but the ecosystem has gained tremendous popularity as a payment platform. Tron enables cheap and fast transactions. In addition, about half of the USDT stablecoins have been minted on the Tron platform.
USDT stablecoin transactions are the single biggest reason for Tron’s success. Tron’s small fees make even micropayments viable. Each transaction is paid with the TRX native token

The future of Tron
Tron’s future seems bright at the moment. Projet’s reputation was relatively poor between 2018 and 2020 when Tron was accused of being a bad Ethereum copy. In addition, the founder, Justin Sun, has been a figure who has divided opinions throughout history.
Justin Sun is a rich and influential figure in the crypto sector. Under his leadership, Tron acquired BitTorrent, and the investor group led by Sun currently owns the Poloniex exchange. Sun has been able to support Tron tremendously behind the scenes.
The problem with Tron is that the project doesn’t offer anything 20 other smart contract platforms don’t provide. Tron’s transactions are cheap and fast, but this is the case with competitors. Tron has even had surprising success with the USDT stablecoin. How long will this success continue, and will there be enough demand for the TRX token?
Like other smart contract platforms, Tron is a Proof of Stake cryptocurrency. The PoS consensus requires a stake from the network’s validators to work. This is good for Tron’s price, as the stake creates demand and locks many coins out of the market.
Tron’s price has held its surface surprisingly well since the beginning of 2022. This has made Tron one of the top 15 cryptocurrencies, and the project will probably remain at least in the top 20 for a long time.
