The term “best cryptocurrency” can refer to different cryptocurrencies, depending on the purpose and perspective. This article explores the features of the top cryptos on the market today. We will also review the most popular cryptos in 2026 and highlight their main characteristics.

The best cryptocurrency – how is it defined?

The idea of the best cryptocurrency is not definable with absolute certainty. This is because the word ‘best’ is inherently subjective, so it can mean different things to different people.

The best crypto might be the most scalable, the one with the fastest transactions, the safest, the oldest in terms of operating history, or the most versatile. It all depends on which feature you value most.

If you are looking for the best crypto based on historical returns, the result also depends on the selected time period. For example, the crypto that performed best in 2026 may not have been among the best performers in two or three years.

It is important for a crypto investor to understand the types of cryptos available on the market. And how the most popular cryptos, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, differ from each other. All cryptocurrencies have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Once you understand the key differences between cryptos, you can evaluate which are best suited to your investment strategy. Then you will find the “best cryptocurrencies” for your portfolio.

Bitcoin (XRP)

Bitcoin is the oldest and most well-known cryptocurrency on the market. It has maintained its position as the largest cryptocurrency despite the influx of millions of new coins entering the market over the years.

Bitcoin was originally created as a digital currency. However, investors’ views have changed significantly over the years as Bitcoin and the broader market have evolved. Today, Bitcoin is widely seen as digital gold, i.e., a store of value.

Bitcoin is generally considered the safest and most reliable project in the crypto market. This is due to its long history, a decentralized development community, operational reliability, and the enormous computing power of the network (miners).

In the 2020s, Bitcoin has also become an investment for institutions, publicly listed companies, and even nation-states. Its mining has also grown into a global business involving numerous publicly listed companies.

More information about Bitcoin:

Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum became the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap in the early 2020s. It is also one of the oldest cryptos on the market, as the Ethereum blockchain was launched back in 2015.

If Bitcoin is by far the best-known cryptocurrency, Ethereum comes in a close second. The two clearly stand out from the rest of the market in terms of popularity. However, Ethereum’s operating logic and role are very different. It is not competing with Bitcoin.

Ethereum is the leading smart contract platform. It is an operating system for smart contracts and decentralized applications. You can think of Ethereum as Android, Windows, or iOS running on top of the blockchain.

Ether (ETH) is Ethereum’s native token. It is used for transaction fees and staking in Ethereum’s Proof of Stake consensus mechanism.

Ethereum has gained many new competitors in the 2020s, but its position as the number one smart contract platform has not been threatened. In recent years, Ethereum has also become increasingly popular with institutional investors.

More information about Ethereum:

Tether (USDT)

Tether is the largest stablecoin by market cap. This means it is a token pegged to the US dollar. A token is a cryptocurrency that does not have its own blockchain. Tokens can be created on smart contract platforms, such as Ethereum.

Tether is the first widely used stablecoin. It initially operated on the Bitcoin blockchain, but has expanded to other blockchains over the past 10 years. Most USDT tokens are currently circulating on the Ethereum and Tron platforms.

Tether acts as a substitute for the US dollar in the crypto market. For example, the largest trading volume of Bitcoin is in USDT exchange pairs. Tether can also be used in decentralized financial applications where bank wire transfers are not available.

XRP (XRP)

XRP has been among the largest cryptocurrencies on the market for 10 years. In the early years of the project, it was also the second-largest crypto for several years, ahead of Ethereum.

XRP is quite different from the other top 10 cryptos. It is also difficult to categorize, as it is neither a pure digital currency nor a full-fledged smart contract platform. A payment system is a fitting description.

XRP is a cryptocurrency developed by the American software company Ripple. It has been operating since 2012. XRP is often called the “bankers’ coin” because Ripple operates in this sector and offers solutions to financial institutions.

XRP has developed a very large following over the years. It is one of the most popular cryptos along with Bitcoin and Ethereum. In recent years, XRP has also increasingly strengthened its position among the largest cryptocurrencies on the market.

More information about XRP:

BNB (BNB)

BNB was launched in 2017 as Binance Coin. It served as the utility token for the then-newly founded Binance exchange. By using the BNB token, you could get discounts on Binance’s trading fees, among other benefits.

In the 2020s, BNB has expanded from a utility token to a full-fledged smart contract platform. At the same time, its name has been changed from Binance Coin to BNB. It is therefore one of Ethereum’s competitors.

BNB has also maintained its original role. Using BNB still gives you benefits on the Binance exchange. Now it’s also the native token of the BNB Chain smart contract platform. BNB is used on BNB Chain for paying transaction fees and staking in the Proof of Staked Authority consensus mechanism.

BNB has been one of Ethereum’s strongest competitors throughout the 2020s, along with Solana.

USDC

USDC is the second-largest stablecoin on the market, i.e., the biggest competitor to Tether. USDC entered the market in 2018 to provide a regulated alternative to Tether.

The crypto market was a “wild west” in terms of regulation in 2018. Circle, the company behind USDC, launched its stablecoin specifically for institutional investors seeking a more regulated option. USDC has published comprehensive audits of its assets since its inception, and, as a US-based operator, it is also subject to strict regulatory oversight.

In the summer of 2022, USDC’s market cap reached almost 90 percent of Tether’s market cap. However, in 2022 and 2023, USDC’s market cap declined significantly, and Tether has remained the dominant stablecoin.

USDC is currently the only dollar-based stablecoin licensed to operate in the EU. Tether (with other dollar-based stablecoins) cannot be purchased on EU-based crypto exchanges.

Solana (SOL)

Solana is one of the best-known smart contract platforms on the market. It is a competitor to the previously introduced Ethereum and BNB. Solana’s blockchain launched in 2020, and the project rose to public awareness during the 2021 crypto boom.

Solana experienced a significant price collapse in 2022. The FTX crypto exchange, which collapsed in late 2022,  was one of its largest backers. This resulted in a reputational hit for Solana, along with ongoing technical issues.

Solana rebounded from these setbacks and gained significant popularity in 2023–2024. Solana became the most popular platform for meme coins in the crypto market. At its peak, hundreds of thousands of meme coins were launched on Solana every month.

Although Solana has only 20% of Ethereum’s market cap, it is seen as one of Ethereum’s strongest competitors. Solana offers good scalability compared to its competitors and has gained a significant following in the 2020s.

More information about Solana:

Tron (TRX)

Tron is a smart contract platform that was launched in 2017. Justin Sun, originally from China, has been the project’s frontman since the beginning. He is one of the most well-known figures in the sector and has also been in the headlines due to controversial events.

Tron was founded as a competitor to Ethereum. Its idea is to offer similar functionality at lower cost and faster transaction speeds.

It is an EVM-compatible blockchain. This means that applications created on the Ethereum platform can be easily cloned on the Tron platform. The previously introduced BNB is also EVM-compatible.

Tron’s ranking as a top 10 cryptocurrency may come as a surprise, as it is surprisingly rarely seen on social media. This is because Tron has profiled itself more as a payment system, especially in developing countries. Tron, along with Ethereum, is the most widely used blockchain for Tether tokens.

More information about Tron:

Dogecoin (DOGE)

Dogecoin (DOGE) is one of the oldest cryptos on the market. It originated in 2013, when American Jackson Palmer had the idea for a new cryptocurrency. Palmer combined the popular Doge meme with the word coin.

Dogecoin is the oldest and best-known meme coin. This refers to a crypto with no real purpose or use case. These coins are often created around popular memes and social media hype and are characterized by low unit prices and large price fluctuations.

Dogecoin differs from other meme coins in that it is a mineable cryptocurrency. Most other memes have been created as tokens on the Ethereum or Solana platform. Dogecoin is also by far the oldest meme coin, as competing meme coins were launched in the 2020s.

This coin gained widespread popularity in the crypto boom of 2020 and 2021 thanks to Elon Musk. Musk frequently tweeted about Dogecoin, saying he was a fan of the project. This led to exceptional price increases.

Elon Musk has not commented on Dogecoin in recent years. Despite this, Dogecoin has retained a large following. Its market cap is currently more than 5 times that of Shiba Inu, the second-largest meme coin.

More information about Dogecoin:

Cardano (ADA)

Cardano is a smart contract platform launched in 2017. Its founder, Charles Hoskinson, is one of the most well-known figures in the crypto industry. Hoskinson was also one of the founding members of Ethereum, but he eventually decided to launch his own crypto project.

Cardano has become known for its academic approach. This is considered by its supporters to be the project’s greatest strength, but at the same time, Cardano’s development has been criticized for progressing too slowly.

Cardano has been among the five largest smart contract platforms by market cap for years. However, it has not gained the popularity of its competitors, as measured by network usage and liquidity locked in the DeFi applications.

Cardano’s closest competitors have clear strengths. For example, Tron has positioned itself as a payments solution, and Solana is for launching meme coins. Cardano has been a bit on the sidelines so far, and the project has not yet fully found its place on the market.

Monero and Zcash are also mineable cryptos, like Bitcoin. They are independent blockchains and operate as digital currencies.

DeFi tokens

Decentralized finance (DeFi) is a sector that emerged in the early 2020s. DeFi refers to decentralized financial apps that operate on smart contract platforms. They focus on lending, staking, and trading.

The most well-known DeFi apps are Uniswap, Aave, Lido, and Hyperliquid. DeFi tokens are tokens associated with these applications. Historically, they had an administrative role, but today DeFi tokens can serve other utilities as well.
